The Tower Shores Board and I continue to be concerned about the early evening traffic congestion on Bay Road. It’s not unusual to have 4-6-8 even 12 cars lined up on the North side of Bay Road waiting for a parking spot in the lot. We have an ongoing dialogue with SoDel (owner of Matt’s) management to continually remind them of our issues and concerns. Matt’s management has taken several steps toward resolution including: parking attendant on duty 7 days/week from 4:30 – 7:30ish, revising the time of trash pickup to after 8:00 AM, pressure washing the parking lot 2x/week and replacing the dumpster. Yet to be done includes stenciling “Carry-out Parking Only” on two dedicated parking spaces among other things.
Traffic congestion is, and will continue to be, a concern to all who travel Bay Road, especially owners. Recommendation: Stay off Bay Road from 4:30-7:30 daily. If entering or exiting Tower Shores, use Admiral, Cove or Dune roads. This way you won’t add to the congestion on Bay. We don’t believe owners should be inconvenienced at all because Matt’s is located in Tower Shores. That said, to stay off Bay during “peak hours” will not only help with congestion but significantly reduce our frustration level.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

And for those coming from Rehoboth during those hours (as I often do) it means going past Tower Shores to make a u-turn at the first available spot since the other TS streets are not available coming from the north.

No offense, Miles, but there’s something about advising owners to avoid Bay Road during dinner hours that rubs me the wrong way.
The road belongs to the community, after all — not SoDel. Once again, no offense, but advising us to stay away from Bay Road in the evening strikes me as caving. Like saying, “If somebody trespasses on your property, disrespects or violates your rights, look the other way and let ’em.”
A few years ago I went down to Matt’s one evening and asked illegal parkers to move — or I’d call the police HAVE THEM removed. I got called a few rude names, but they all left. At 69.5 years of age, I might be getting a little old for that sort of thing now, but if that what it takes, I can go back and do it again.

Jim, Thanks for your response; no offense taken. The issue with major congestion nearly every evening at dinner hour is a problem, especially for those of us in close proximity to Matt’s. The purpose of my post was to recommend that TSBA owners stay off Bay to not only reduce congestion but eliminate the hassle of “working” through the cars looking for/awaiting parking. Nearly every night with a lineup of cars on the north side of Bay, vehicles come down Bay to exit at Rte 1 & find themselves on the left side of Bay facing vehicles coming in off of Rte 1.
To your point re: police intervention…Tower Shores is a private community. The DE State Police have repeatedly told us they have no authority for traffic control on our streets. I too have spent time trying to “encourage” those blocking traffic to move, usually resulting in verbal abuse but no movement. We appreciate your willingness to serve as “traffic cop” on Bay. Neither you nor I nor anyone else should need to subject themselves to the verbal abuse that often results.
We don’t see this a “caving” at all, just suggesting an alternative which will result in a more peaceful exit/entrance from/into Tower Shores.
“Tower Shores is the victim of Matt’s Fish Camp’s success.”

Miles- I love and respect you. But when it comes to Matt’s, I fear you suffer from Stockholm syndrome. The “progress” you suggest is ephemeral. They are becoming increasingly disdainful of our concerns. Chris has told me he tried to move trash pickup with Waste management to after 8 AM but he can’t. Sodelconcepts can’t arrange pickups and deliveries by their vendors??? All believers say Aye.
I have kept an informal log of the pollution Matt’s thrusts on Bay road. It is attached below. But know this- THEY HAVE NOT REDUCED OR RESCHEDULED PICK UPS AND DELIVERIES. THEY KNOW IT IS WRONG BUT DO IT ANYWAY. And I am confidence Chris is part of the Problem, not the solution.
<“8-4 10:20 PM- staff noisily empties glass bottles into recycling receptacles- awakened by noise
8-5- Waste Mgmt- 6 AM. The full experience- air breaks, idling engine for up to 10 minutes, gate opening, drag/engage with dumpster; empty dumpster; clang the dumpster a couple of times to assure it is empty (and that the neighbors are awake); return dumpster to gated area; scrape to assure it is fully in place; rev engine; wheel around on Bay Road- depart 6:13.
8-6- Vegetable delivery 7:20; Schagrin Gas 8:20; Waste Mgmt.-Recycling truck- 8:25. Vege truck parked on Matt lot; others in Bay Road. Power washing 10:00 AM (much needed). NOTE- at 10:53, 5 of the 31 spots on the lot are in use…before Customers arrive. 11:17 Budget truck parks partially in Bay.
8-7-19 Waste Mgmt. wake up at 6:10 AM.
8-12-19 WM at 6:19 AM; Sysco at 7:35 AM; spoke with Fish Truck block west bound bay at 1 PM when lot is ½ full…why not park on lot. At 6ish pm, a car pulls into the right lane of NB 1 to get around car attempting to turn right on Bay, so as to park on street facing spot on Matt’s Chris at 3 PM…he has nothing to offer.
*What if they line up cars headed EB on Bay. When spot opens, car goes Bay to Ocean to Admiral and then proceeds to streetside spot or to attendant who points him to spot.
8-13-19 WM recycling 7:45 AM. 11:14 Deep Eddy Vodka in EB Bay when lot is empty! Why?
8-14 WM 5:58 dumpster dance.
8-19 Waste Management arrives Late…at 6:15 AM.
The only solution I can suggest are make Bay one way WEST bound. Will it inconvenience south bound travelers- Yes. You will go past Bay, hook a Uturn and then enter Admiral, Cove or Dune. Not too odious. The benefit, Matt people will not be uturning in neighborhood driveways, they will not be clogging Rt. One at Bay. I suspect Admiral will catch most of the increased flow…may be then 2 streets will recognize Matt’s for the scourge on our community they have chosen to become.
Remember, they were going to have employees park elsewhere and shuttle them in…have you seen the Matt’s shuttle. They now fill nearly 20 % of the parking spots with employee cars. I speculate that they allow this since having all spots filled with guests exceeds their ability to deliver fried fare for which they are aromatically known.
I suggested to Chris they move Matt’s to the G and E parking lot, with mucho parking and more distant victims, I mean neighbors. Then turn the Tower Shore facility into the Sodelconcepts Training and professional development center…you have to be taught how to handle 500 degree fat! And it could also house their community service and outreach team. A true Win-win.
In closing, I love Tower Shores and hate to see it treated the way Sodel and Matt’s have chosen to treat us. Thank you.

Matt’s seems to be sinking to new lows. Observations since Monday:
____Last night the cars stopped and standing in the NO STOPPING OR STANDING area of Bay road maxed at NINE (9). The U turns on Bay seemed to involve virtually every driveway. The Shively’s were under particular assault. What is the pollution factor of so many idling cars???
—Unsurprising but annoying- Waste Management on Wednesday emptied the dumpster at 5:58…no where near a record but heinous nonetheless.
—Today, 8-22-19 a new record for the Degradation of our property rights and right to peaceful use of our properties was set. THE SYSCO TRUCK UNLOADED ITS TRACTOR TRAILER WITH ATTENDANT MOTOR, RAMP, AND TRUCK NOISE AT 4:13 AM.
Sodelco and Matt’s have nothing but disdain for our Community. They demonstrate that again and again. As Miles so correctly notes, Tower Shores is the Victim of Matt’s success. Tower Shores is also incredibly acquiescent.
