TO: TOWER SHORES ASSOCIATION OWNERS
Need your Help to Improving Safety along Route 1
Expect that you know a group of our neighbors are working to improve the safety along Route 1 between the Indian River Bridge and the traffic light at the Fred Hudson roadway. Called the “Coalition for a Safer North Bethany”; their efforts are going well but they need a extra boost from us. We are encouraged to contact both Delaware Senator Gerald Hocker, Delaware Representative Ron Gray and some others to ask for their active support to make these improvements. It is very important to call and speak directly with Gerald Hocker and Ron Gray to encourage them to support the Coalition for a Safer North Bethany. They are both are up for re-election this fall. Senator Hocker was first elected as a Representative in 2002 and then to the Senate in 2012. Rep. Gray was elected in 2012. The best way reach Gerald Hocker directly are at his home 302-539-4140 or his office 302-539-9662. Or ask for him when you’re shopping at the G&E grocery store, where he is most days.
Ron Gray can be reached at 302-436-7024
Shown below describes what you may want to communicate with them and also provided is additional contact info.

When You Call or Email, the State Senator and Representative need to hear this type of information from us:
- The population along Route One in North Bethany Beach from the Indian River Bridge to the Fred Hudson Road has increased dramatically during the last many years with an associated increase in walkers, runners & bikers and many more vehicles leaving and entering the developments and the two busy restaurants along this highway.
- This increased activity makes the existing 55 mph speed limit unsafe and we believe it needs to be reduced to 45 mph with improved signage and other improvements. On July 31 two senior DelDOT engineers/transportation planners examined this portion of Route 1 with members of our neighborhoods’ “Coalition for a Safer North Bethany” and they totally agreed that the speed limit should be reduced to 45 mph and signage needs to be upgraded to improve safety. They promised to “put together a team to further evaluate the details of the North Bethany situation and will keep us informed”.
- These State Engineers/Transportation Planners mentioned some barriers they face such as competing priorities and getting funding. We ask that you please influence the direction of these activities on our behalf to make these safety improvements along Route 1.
Please Note: If you are a resident of Delaware please mention that to them.
